FAQ

What does it mean to be a MoneySense Approved Financial Advisor?

MoneySense is Canada’s leading personal finance media brand. It is also the only directory of financial advisors who surpass MoneySense’s standards and passed their own rigorous test for:
  • Customer service
  • Fair and reasonable pricing
  • Knowledge and experience
  • Transparent fees and reporting

MoneySense has done the legwork so that you don't have to. MoneySense screens applicants for their qualifications and subjects them to an extensive survey of their services and practices, including fees and adherence to high standards of client service. In order to be MoneySense Approved, advisors must exceed a certain score in their proprietary evaluation and an anonymous survey of their existing clients. They pay a fee to participate in this program, but only those with top marks actually make it onto the list.

What does the term “independent Financial Advisor” mean?

Independent Financial Advisor can separate his/her advice from the sale of any products. There are no conflicts caused by a dealership grid compensation payout model and the advisor is free of any institutional biases (like bank or brokerage companies). Advisor’s compensation is not tied to any sales numbers. The advisor offers the best solutions for each individual client based on their unique situation.

How are you compensated?

Our compensation is fully disclosed before any recommendations are made or any of your money is invested. As the client you ultimately decide what you feel is best for you.

We are proud to offer a Fee-for-Service Platform that aligns our interests with those of our investors. In some circumstances, your fees may even be tax deductible.

In a world full of confusing advertising, products and services that all look very similar, what makes you different from the banks and others?

First we start by learning about you one on one. Things like, your needs, goals, time horizon, comfort level and previous experiences. We then help you to clarify your current situation and review how you got there. We identify potential problems and opportunities.

We educate you on the pros and cons of the many investment products available. We review things like risk, liquidity, tax efficiency and true cost. Once you have this information you are in a better position to implement the appropriate strategies designed to achieve your specific goals. The plan does not stop once your investments are made. We continue to help you on an ongoing basis. We review and update your plan regularly to ensure you are on track to achieve your goals in the timeline you established.

Are you available to work with me after business hours?

Absolutely. We offer flexible meeting times and locations to best recognize your individual needs and unique situation.

How do I find out if a Financial Advisor is properly and fully licensed and able to offer me all investment products and not just mutual funds?

This information can be found on the IIROC (Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada) website. An IIROC licensed advisor is fully licensed and provides you with $1,000,000.00 of insurance protection through the CIFP (Canadian Investor Protection Fund).

Do I really need a Financial Planner?

For many people the world of finance is a confusing place. Ask yourself these questions:
  • Do you have the time and desire to sort through all the information and opportunities out there? Do you understand how those opportunities can apply to your situation?
  • Can you keep up with changes to income taxes, investment products, estate laws, etc.?
  • Are you receiving conflicting advice from different sources? Is your bank representative telling you something different from your insurance agent or tax preparer?
  • How do you find out what is "right" for you?
  • Are you unsure of where to invest? Do you want a higher return but do not want to take higher risk? What return do you need to meet your individual goals? We will provide independent and objective advice to put you on the right track to achieve your individual goals. You will know whether you are on the right track or how to get back on track.

Our clients have the peace of mind knowing that they are doing all the right things given their situation.
